Some people look for a beautiful place. Others make places beautiful.

It doesn’t take long for clients to quickly turn down the offer of a lifestyle photo session in their home. Most opt for a dreamy studio session or have us { whimsies } scope out the perfect outdoor location for their engagement, newborn and family photos. Don’t get us wrong, we love the images created in our studio and above all, YES, we { LOVE } working outdoors. But there’s a little piece of our heart that aches for more { whimsies } opting for in-home sessions.

Most moms quickly exclaim, “Oh no, my house is a disaster!” and dad’s will joke, “I haven’t mowed the lawn in a month!” But we promise you – we are not looking for beautiful places, we are looking to make your place beautiful!

Yes, your every day, sometimes crazy, mismatched, stained and well loved home!

But the truth of the matter is, home is where your husband will be most at ease, your newborns most cozy, your children { surprisingly } well behaved and precious memories are at our fingertips!

Three years ago, when Ashley & I were just getting this whole { whimsy } thing off the ground, a special little man entered our lives! Due to some unforeseen circumstances, Mr. Holden had to spend a little extra time in the hospital. Every single image Ashley posted had me thinking, “This woman is magic – she even makes a HOSPITAL look dreamy!” Take a look. . .

We’ve also had the excitement of taking soon-to-be-momma’s and new brides to fun locations in town. Check out how fun our very own Marketplace looks – and who doesn’t love a good Kroll’s milkshake?

We’re always up for a good farmstead and adventure and a good backyard frolic!

Backyard.jpg

There are a few things { Hint of Whimsy } has been dying to capture. . .

  • A birth story!
  • Life on the farm!
  • Planting your garden!
  • The heartbeat of a home - the living room!
  • A backyard BBQ!
  • An afternoon stroll with your pups!
  • Laundry day!
  • Naptime!
  • Breakfast, lunch or family dinner!
  • A camping trip!

Calling all { whimsy daddies! }

Dear { whimsies, }

Hint of Whimsy is seeking a model for our upcoming { Daddy&Me } Mini Sessions!

We are looking for a daddy with 2-3 kiddos who are not afraid to play in front of the camera! Ages 2-8 preferred, and at least one daughter is preferred but not necessary.

We would like to be involved in the outfit choices but will work with clothing & accessories already existing in your closet!

The family must be available for an evening session and willing to play outdoors.

If you, or a daddy you know, is interested in modeling, please submit a photo to hintofwhimsy@me.com by May 5, 2014.

The { daddy } we choose will receive one digital file, an 8x10 print and 16 wallets of his choice for participating. The daddy we choose will be notified by May 7, 2014. All other submissions will be kept for future modeling needs!

Whimsy's { What TO Wear! }

One of the questions we are asked most frequently is the same question I ask myself each and every morning. . . . “what should I wear!?” Here are a few quick tips & tricks to get you through tomorrow morning AND our upcoming { Mommy & Me } Mini Sessions!

First, consider YOUR style: sporty? dressy? trendy? casual? Always dress within your comfort zone! Never buy an outfit for a session that you wouldn’t wear in public. For { Mommy & Me } Minis, Ashley & I feel that neutral colors are most appropriate! Here are a few hints & tips:

  • Neutrals: white, cream, tan, gray
  • Pastels: pink, blue, lavender, yellow

  • Trendy colors: mint, coral, mustard, teal

  • Light or small patterns can add variety!

Hints for FAMILIES:

Consider choosing one piece of clothing that includes many colors you like for the person HARDEST to dress. Use that piece to plan around in the rest of the outfits! (Note: Matching outfits can look dated – try to stay away from everyone in jeans, sisters in identical dresses, or more than one plaid shirt on your boys!)

Try choosing a “palette” - fall colors, spring, neutral or brights! Choose two accent colors to use in every outfit. You can also start with neutrals and add from there! Here are a few more ideas:

  • Mix & Match Patterns (include a few solids so the patterns aren’t overwhelming)

  • Add Texture! (knit, denim, ruffles, lace)

  • Layer! (think scarves, jackets, leggings)

  • Don't stress over shoes! (barefoot is cute for kiddos!)

  • Stay away from graphic t-shirts, anything with text can be distracting in photos!

If you really feel at a loss when choosing just what to wear. . . message us! We love receiving texted photos of our clients outfit considerations and we always encourage families to bring EXTRA clothing and accessories to the session and we can help you choose!

Hope this helps!
- aaron

Whimsy is the gleam in our eyes

Every once in a while, our inbox surprises us. It catches us off guard with a particular note that prompts a lift in our posture, inspires our smiles, and lingers long after the day is done.

This is one of those messages . . . an excerpt from a book by Bob Goff and sent to us on a whim, out of the blue, by a dear friend.

“Whimsy was the gleam in our eyes; whimsy swelled the sails; whimsy swelled our hearts. That is the way whimsy works. It's a renewable, infinite resource that multiples. I've come to understand more about faith as I've understood more about whimsy. What whimsy means to me is a combination of the "do" part of faith along with doing something worth doing. It's whimsy that spreads hope like grass seed in the wind. Whimsy reminds me of the Bible, too, when it talks about stuff being like an aroma. It is not an overpowering one, just something that has a scent of God's love, an unmistakable scent that lingers.”

For us, this is whimsy.

Disk Seekers & Memory Keepers

In honor of Facebook’s 10 anniversary, the Facebook team put together the ultimate #ThrowbackThursday – an algorithm that allows all 1 billion+ active users to share a personal video highlighting their Facebook history.

Lovers and haters of this nostalgic feature have clogged our newsfeeds and facebook-ers have watched (or avoided!) these “Facebook Movies” for over a week! But, why?

It’s 2014!

We no longer wait for film to be processed at the local drug store and long gone are the days of passing around photo albums at family gatherings. In 2014, we press play, while Facebook compiles our most precious memories to digitally share with friends and family.

In this digital age, it is safe to say that the most often asked question we receive from clients and prospective clients is whether we offer “the disk” or copyright of our images. Look, we get it! Families, couples and new mommies just want to be able to share their memories with the world!

IMG_8397_edited.jpg

But wouldn’t you agree that pictures look much better on your real wall than your Facebook wall?

We promise: Your precious memories will look much better displayed on your mantle than collaged together in a one-minute video! Your family portraits will look much better framed above your sofa than saved to a disk in your drawer.

This post is for the disk seekers, and memory keepers – don’t discount photographers for not selling copyright. By only offering printed products, rather than digital copies, photographers are able to ensure their images are pure and of quality! Please know that a CD of images is no more secure or timeless than 4x6 prints of your session. (Who says our little ones will even know what CD stands for?!)

At Hint of Whimsy, we’ve updated our packages to include 4x6 prints of every session. No minimum purchase. No strings attached.

Why?

Because we want you to send your grandma her own framed 5x7 for Valentine’s Day. We want you to see the smile on your father’s face when he flips through your custom album or session proofs. We want you to treasure your memories each and every day, to fill your walls with the smiles and laugher of the people you love – the precious moments that define your world.

2013 Recap!

Well whimsies, it’s been pretty quiet around here lately – Ashley & I have been taking a little extended holiday hiatus after a crazy Christmas season! To show you what we mean, we put together a little 2013 recap.

2013 was good to us! We were blessed with:

  • 1 Intern! { yay Molly! }
  • 150 Photo Shoots
  • 6 different mini session themes
  • 2 TV appearances
  • 8 donated sessions

. . . You know, rather than tell you. Why don’t we show you? Take a look at our 2013 infographic to see a few crazy statistics from the past few months. . .

* These statistics were tallied by hand from November 1, 2013 through January 1, 2013!

Hello there, 2014!

Well Whimsies, that’s a wrap! Ashley & I rang in the New Year with warm hearts, knowing 2013 has been a delightful year for Hint of Whimsy! When we woke up on New Years morning, we greeted the year with a warm, “Hello there, 2014!”

As I sit here in my fuzzy socks, ignoring the ice age developing on the other side of my chartreuse polka dot curtains, I can’t help but think about what tomorrow will look like, what this year in Whimsy will bring us and how life in 2014 could be any more wonderful than 2013 was.

There are very few things Whimsy would change about 2013, but there are always just a few things we look forward in the start of a new year. . . so in 2014, we whimsies hope to. . .

  • wear more polka dots
  • find more vintage quilts
  • dance with more 5 year olds
  • capture more first dances
  • smash more cakes!
  • hang more family portraits

Bring it on, 2014!

New Year, New Whimsy.jpg

It's starting to look a lot like Christmas!

The light fluff that fell softly from above made today feel like Christmas! Our stockings are hung on the record player with care and the aroma of cinnamon and pine needles filled the air. For Aaron & Ashley, it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas!

Take a peek inside our homes to see that even our homes are filled with some holiday { whimsy! }

There will be much mistletoeing and hearts will be glowing this Christmas!

We wish you the merriest,
-aaron

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is signing loud for all to hear!

For a while, I truly thought the tradition of sending holiday greeting cards was fading. The digital age has soured the significance of printed products. Who needs to send out a holiday letter when your Facebook friends see what you’re up to on an hourly basis?

Some feel that it is an easy area in the Christmas budget to cut.

Others simply never get around to crossing off that holiday to-do item.

For me, there is nothing more uplifting than a mailbox full of holiday greeting cards and knowing someone stopped to think of YOU during the hustle and bustle of Christmas! Although we all love sharing pictures and connecting with those we love via social media, snail mail has a much more personalized touch.

Every morning over eggnog and sugar cookies (okay, that’s an exaggeration) I click through email requests for holiday Christmas cards and it makes me feel like SINGGINGGGG!

I know the tradition hasn’t faded! My friends, family, clients, neighbors – they all value the lick-sealed- crooked-stamped-hand-delivered-JOY that is the holiday greeting card.

So dear clients, it is not too late to place a holiday greeting card order! Through December 13th, we will accept orders and promise on-time arrival!

Each and every card is custom designed to reflect your family and guaranteed to help spread holiday cheer for your friends close & near!

Be merry & bright,

Ask us Anything! { whimsies spill the beans! }

AskUs.jpg

Whether you’re a brand new client or have known us for years, I’m sure there’s a question you’ve always wanted to ask and never had the chance. Good news! { aaron & Ashley } will be personally fielding inquiries through the end of the year and after January 1st, we’ll be debuting a video blog revealing all of our candid answers!

Ask us ANYTHING! Serious or silly, we’re ready to air out the dirty laundry. We’ve even proposed a few questions to kickstart the process. So { whimsies! } ASK AWAY.

Questions will be accepted through any mode of communication: email, Facebook message, text, telegraph, telephone, etc. . .

  1. How did you come up with the name Hint of Whimsy?
  2. Do you two ever disagree?
  3. Who’s the boss?
  4. What is the hardest part of owning a photography business?
  5. N*SYNC or Backstreet Boys?
